Our Goal
Influence municipal, provincial, and national systems to adopt, implement, and monitor universal access standards in transport and the built environment, including sidewalks, public facilities, and planning processes.
Why This Matters
Persons with disabilities continue to encounter barriers in public transport, pedestrian infrastructure, public facilities, and the built environment.
Accessibility must be incorporated into planning and implementation from the outset, with persons with disabilities meaningfully involved in decisions that affect them.
Our Work in This Area
Mobilise for Mobility: The Right to Accessible Transport
The Network's current formal accessible transport campaign advocates for accessible, equitable, and sustainable public transport for persons with disabilities.
It grew out of advocacy around threats to Cape Town's Dial-a-Ride service and now addresses the broader right to accessible public transport.
Dial-a-Ride Advocacy
We work with Dial-a-Ride users and advocacy partners to protect and improve this essential service, including engagement with the City of Cape Town and legal advocacy where necessary.
National Land Transport Act Advocacy
Our National Land Transport Act advocacy grew out of the need for accessibility to be built into mainstream public transport rather than relying indefinitely on specialised services.
The Network and its partners handed a petition to Parliament on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in December 2025 and were subsequently invited to present our concerns and recommendations.
Engagement remains ongoing.
City of Cape Town Transversal Committee on Universal Access
The Network participates in the City of Cape Town's Transversal Committee on Universal Access to provide disability-sector input on municipal accessibility, infrastructure, services, and planning.
